In learning new skills, there is no substitute for watching an experienced person demonstrating the skill – whether it be a golf swing, a dance step, a yoga posture – or making love.

For humans, sexual behavior is learned, not instinctual. And in Western culture there are a limited number of ways to learn about sex – most of them not so accurate or helpful. Michael Castleman, in his book Great Sex, asserts that the primary sexuality education most young men receive is from watching porn – a process he likens to learning how to drive by watching action movies.

Experimentation and exploration is another approach to learning about sex, involving trial and error with a partner. This can be a lot of fun if partners are curious and comfortable with trying new things without a lot of anxiety. Another time-honored way of learning about sex is to learn from a more experienced partner. This is an initiation, which can be glorious under the proper circumstances – or abusive if the inexperienced person is not an adult and the activity is not fully consensual.
